Super Predictions
2006-01-30 21:27
by Mike Carminati

It seems baseball has ceded this week to the football gods. I mean, Clemens working out is the #1 story at Major League Baseball's site. The number two story is about the Seattle Moose being sacrificed—those Steeler fans are mean:

Anyway, as I await my usual combinations of 2's & 9's in the Super Bowl boxes pool, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at how well the Super Bowl champs predict the World Series champ. Long story short, they don't, but I already have the table and am loath to write about the WBC being broadcast on ESPN (yawn), so here goes:

So for all of you Steeler and Seahawk fans who are expecting a Super Bowl win to bleed into success this baseball season, to quote Judas Priest, as is my wont, you got another comin'.

Oh, by the way, the Steelers will win 35-24. Really, Mean Joe.

Steelers winning this game is a "no brainer" in my opinion, though after some of my predictions in the past, I've been told that I am a "no brainer". :) Common sense tells you that the NFC is the minor leagues and the AFC is the pro league. Sure Seattle is good, they are the best of the minor league and may even be a formidable opponent, but who have they beat? Washington, Carolina and a very weak NFC West division. Pittsburgh on the otherhand manhandled the Colts, one of the best offensive teams in recent history and even pretty good defensively this year. They then won at Denver, and amazingly ended up beating the #1, #2 and #3 seeds all on the road. That is an amazing accomplishment. I think Seattle would've been lucky to make the playoffs had they been in the AFC. I really don't see this game being anywhere near the four point spread. I see atleast a +10 win for the Steelers and wouldn't be surprised with a +20 win and the game over by half-time. Think Ravens v Giants in this one, as far as how evenly the two teams are matched.

Two comments:

1) Pittsburch has played no fewer than EIGHT teams that I consider to be better than anybody Seattle played: Indy twice (Seattle's 2nd team vs. Indy's 2nd team doesn't count), Cincy 3 times, NE, Denver, SD. You could argue Jax but they beat both of these teams anyways.

What this means is that Pittsburgh is sure to show Seattle levels of play that they just haven't seen, where Seattle can't do the same to the Steelers. This is Pittsburgh's big advantage.

2) OTOH, Seattle is 14-2 in games that mattered. They took care of business and you can't rule out that they can step up in class and still win.

Or it could mean that Pittsburgh used up its luck in running the table on the road.
My prediction: 26-24 Steelers. Game is won on a 4th and goal at the one yard line with 2 seconds on the clock. Bettis runs in for the score.

Toronto and Buffalo are sort of close geographically. I guess that shouldn't count.
